Work placement BLOG 1

Week1 Tuesday 26th of October I started my work placement in a company called Peninsula witch was an employment law agency who help employers when inquires.

I started at 9:00 am every Thursday morning in reception learning about the rolls and how reception is a big part of a company to make it run smoothly. Amy the receptionist did out a time table for me witch showed each department of the company I would spend time with throughout the day.

9:00-10:00 with the reception

10:00-11:00 with customer experience

11:00-12:00 with advice

12:00-1:00 Lunch

1:00-3:00 with Grafit (sister company of peninsula)

3:00-4:00 with law and then finishing the day off with

4:00-5:00 with law .

Experiencing all these departments were extremely interesting to see.

I learned how to be able to shadow people without being in the way but still being able to put up different things they do in their work day.

I really think this work placement will be very worthwhile for me as it shows the different departments in HR, what one will suit me the most.

I hope to be more challenge in the future while doing work placement as I will be afraid I’ll get bored if it is the same work every Thursday.

Last Thursday they set me up on a computer and gave me a lot of post that needed to be put in to excel and put in to a return pile. This made me practice my typing skills and also using excel is important in the work place. I found this work quite tedious but also felt useful as I wasn’t just shadowing someone.

I also was aloud be on a contract call with documentations, this call lasted 2 and a half hours filling out questions from a client to be able to draw up contracts for each of her employees. She had 8 employees, one was on a fixed contract and 4 on full time contracts and 3 on full time (On call contracts). being able to be listen in on this call gave me a huge insight in to contracts and how they are written up and what makes contracts legally binding.

  1. Completed Tasks:

-I have completed tasks such as helping out with reception, shadowing certain people in different departments and helping with their mail on excel. A lot of the tasks are quite repetitive so each week their not much different.

  1. Skills Update

-Each week I am gaining more and more skills which helps working in the office environment. Learning how to dress appropriate each week for work placement is a good skill I’m learning know what is exactly office attire.

The appropriate manner on how to act in the office to be able to have office talk without chatting outside the boundaries keeping the chat professional but still friendly.

Computer and excel skills are becoming faster and more efficient. Being able to type faster is a good skill to have as it shows Your prompted and can get work done in good time.

  1. Reflection on Usefulness

  • I think the experiences is definitely worthwhile as I strive to work in the professional office field in the future, learning how day to day life is and how it works in an office is very important for me to understand if it is right for me.

Sometimes it can be boring going in each Thursday as they do not have a lot of work for me at times, but I try to stay as busy as possible and interact to show my interest with in the company to be professional.

  1. Challenges / Issues Encountered

  • One of the days they had me proof read one of them leaflets for their company to see if there is any mistakes or if I had any ideas for it, I struggled a bit with this as I am dyslexic and was afraid I would correct something that was right to wrong. Also coming up with some new ideas was a bit of a creative challenge as it can be something I lack in at times. At the end of it I handed up my notes to one of the head leaders and he read them and seemed to be impressed so I was happy with the challenge.

  1. Next Steps

  • Unfortunately, I have been absence from work placement also as well as college due to a back injury witch has been disappointing to me as I was enjoying the work and progress I have been making with work experience in HR company Peninsula. I feel I have let them down as I only do one day a week and don’t want the company to feel I am not interested as I am very interested in the work they do in the company.

When I return to the company for work experience I hope to be able to go to a disciplinary hearing, they have said I could go listen in on one, I find that would be very interesting to sit in on .

  • Tasks:

Since the last blog I’ve done I had been absence from Work placement due to illness. I have returned to Peninsula on the 1st of February.

I prepared post and packaging boxes for their catalogs for their clients, I then was shown how to use labels properly .

Later on in the day I was then given 2018-2008 Industrial relation newspapers to scan each months of them on to the computer to be able to have on file easier for people working there to access.

Skills Update

They have now started to teach me how to do Shipping label scans for their packaged to be sent to clients. I found this interesting to learn as if I start work in any large company I will have to know this, to be able to get official scan labels of the shipping curriers.

They also thought me how to use their scanner properly and how it scans items and sends straight to your email within 3 minutes’ witch was very smart. The girl teaching me showed me tricks to be able to speed up the process such as scanning two pages at once.

I already known how to scan but to be shown different tricks to be faster and more efficient really helped to speed everything up.

Reflection on Usefulness

I do feel that this experience is very useful as the tasks and skills they are teaching me in the office I will need anywhere in any office I may work in when I’m graduated, learning these skills now will really work to my advantage next time I need to work in a office.

Challenges / Issues Encountered

At one point the scanner stopped working and kept flashing ‘error’ so I had to try fix the problem by ringing peninsulas Manchester office where the IT people are located and get them to talk me threw step by step to get the scanner back working. This was interesting process as I was given responsibly on something that is really needed in the day at the office in peninsula.

Next Steps

The tasks I expect to work on between this blog update and the next one would to be given more work such as the stuff iv learned as they will be very useful for me in the future .
